The FEBS/EMBO lecture course on “Ion Channels and Transporters” has been hosted five times since 2002, as part of the International School of Biophysics in Erice, Italy. Over the years, this event has been attended by hundreds of PhD. students and postdocs. The lectures are delivered by international experts, are always of the highest quality, and combine both didactic and cutting-edge elements.
The principal aim of the 5th course is to provide a broad coverage of modern aspects of ion channel and transporter scientific research. Topics covered will range from structural biology and advanced optogenetics to the role of ion channels and transporters in human health and disease. Lecturers will illustrate how their research effort has translated from the lab to the bedside and how clinical research has inspired new laboratory investigations. More general topics such as public engagement and the role of women in science will also be covered.
The course will also include didactic tutorials and hands-on exercises. This will offer participants the chance to reflect on the key ideas that lay the foundation of the field, as well as present their own data through posters and data blitzes. There will thus be multiple opportunities for discussion and ad hoc interactions between students and lecturers.
The small town of Erice has a relaxed atmosphere and provides a beautiful setting for the course.
